Two years ago, my husband and I took in a beautiful orange cat, “Tiger,” when a friend of ours became too ill to care for him. We weren’t sure we wanted a pet—I suffer from dander and dust allergies—but we decided to give it a try.

A friend of ours recently passed away and left two dogs that need someone to care for them. We’re happy to take them in, but I know we’ll need to adjust our budget to cover their needs. How much does it cost to care for two healthy adult dogs?
Dear Paws: I live in a part of the country that rarely sees extreme weather events like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods or blizzards. So I never gave much thought to having a disaster preparedness kit. However, a couple of weeks ago my neighbor’s house caught fire and burned down.
