Lazarus, a rescued kitten that was born with a cleft palate, is thriving in his new home, and his rescuer and new owner hopes he will become a therapy pet.
Cindy Chambers found the 10-week-old Lazarus roaming the streets of Johnson City, Tenn., last fall. He was severely malnourished and had a number of infections. But thanks to medical care and surgery to remove his upper canines, the kitten is thriving. Funding for Lazarus’ medical care was provided by hundreds of online donors via FundRazr, and his surgery took place in January.
Lazarus’ new post-surgery look has his lower fangs protruding upward, making him look somewhat like a “vampire’ cat, as he was dubbed on Jezebel. He won’t have additional surgeries at this time as they aren’t medically necessary, Chambers wrote on the FundRazr page. However, Chambers says he is training to become a therapy cat in the hopes that he will be an inspiration to people with disabilities.
